Galveston Bay $15.48 Galveston Bay is the recreational center of the Texas coast–a fishing, boating, and birdwatching playground for the almost four million people who live on or near it. A shallow estuary of about 350,000 acres, the bay supports a rich assortment of wildlife and a commercial fishery that pulls millions of pounds of crabs, shrimp, and oysters from the water each year. Gateway to the Port of Houston, Galveston Bay is also a major corridor for huge volumes of international shipping and is home to the nation’s largest petrochemical manufacturing complex. How can such divergent and apparently contradictory activities coexist? Setting out to find some answers, Sally E. Antrobus has produced a book for residents and visitors alike that tunes them in to what is happening in, on, and to the bay–the book she herself wished for when she first came to live nearby. Beginning with a short, incisive history of the peopling of the area, Antrobus describes how the bay works ecologically and how it is put to work, for recreation and for commerce; how nature both contributes to and controls the human enterprise there; and how power and politics can destroy all the bay has to offer. Antrobus serves as an expert guide for those who want to discover hidden destinations and attend events that celebrate the life on Galveston Bay. Her resources section offers a wealth of ways to become active in local conservation efforts, reminding us there is much to hope for but also much to do to ensure the survival of this great bay. |

Alexandria Bay $21.46 Alexandria Bay reveals a place that is blessed with extraordinary natural beauty, great fishing, fine resorts, and myriad entertainments. Located in the heart of the Thousand Islands, Alexandria Bay — a preeminent tourist destination for visitors from all nations — owes a great part of its history to its strategic position on the St. Lawrence River, the natural border between Canada and the United States. Surveyed as a potential shipping port in 1804, the area was not settled until after the War of 1812. French nobleman James D. LeRay built the first tavern and warehouse in 1818 to serve nascent shipping and logging industries and named the new settlement after his son, Alexander. By 1848, the first hotel had opened, signaling the birth of a tourist industry. Real prominence, however, began with a visit by President Ulysses S. Grant and family in 1872; the construction of palatial summer "cottages" and the opening of deluxe hotels followed shortly thereafter. Thus evolved the burgeoning business of tourism, which to this day constitutes the primary occupation of the village. |

Around Three Mile Bay $17.43 Three Mile Bay, located just below the Canadian border in the town of Lyme, was settled between 1810 and 1820. Early immigrants from Canada and Europe were drawn by the abundance of water-powered mills and factories along the areaas waterways. At the mouth of Three Mile Creek stood the sawmill of Peter and Richard Estes, built in 1820; from 1860 to the 1900s, limestone quarried in the Three Mile Bay area was known for its superior quality. Resident Asa Wilcox built 48 brigs, propellers, schooners, and other seafaring vessels from 1835 to 1853, some ultimately joining the approximately 500 shipwrecked vessels now resting at the bottom of Lake Ontario. Fishing and selling potash were often carried on by farmers as side ventures. When loads of potash, and occasionally wheat, were hauled to Albany, on the return trip merchandise was brought back to be sold in local stores. For generations, families developed their trades and helped to sustain the hard-working people of the hamlet of Three Mile Bay. |

Fishing for Beauty $21.49 In this memoir and manifesto, Tom Bachmann fell in love as a child with the landscape of salt marsh, bay, and ocean on eastern Long Island. He was running the outboard alone when he was seven, and fishing soon after. For him, life on the sea was a series of adventures, and he describes childhood exploration along the coast, bluefish fishing in the "Race," striped bass fishing at night, and then the thrills and disappointments of offshore fishing for tuna and white marlin. The fishing and sea landscape brought meaning to his life, which had seemed pointless when growing up in suburbia. Slowly, the atavistic satisfaction of the successful hunter was replaced by a knowledge that what is seen is what is remembered, that the overwhelming beauty is an unexpected and revealing gift. Some answers to questions of ultimate purpose, about a creator and death in a world defined by science become clearer under the influence of the aesthetics of the wide-open sea and shore. What starts as a life of adventure turns into a life of appreciation and caring for the sea animals and plants, and a new understanding of why we are here. |

Babylon By the Sea $21.99 Babylon by the Sea focuses on a seaside community that, once rich in salt marshes, attracted many of the area’s first settlers. Originally called Sumpawam, it was purchased from Native Americans in 1670. The township was formed from South Huntington and named Babylon in 1802 by Mrs. Conklin, a staunch advocate of the Bible. Babylon includes the villages of Lindenhurst and Amityville, and the hamlets of North and West Babylon, Copaigue, Deer Park, Farmingdale, and Wyandanch. This vibrant community evolved from a humble beginning of farming, fishing, and whaling into an attractive resort community. The area was unknown until the nearby barrier beach, Fire Island, gained prominence as a summer resort. The South Shore line of the Long Island Railroad gave the seaside locality impetus when the train reached Babylon in 1867. Hotels and boardinghouses sprang up around town and beside the sea. Among the pleasure seekers were many wealthy New Yorkers who came in quest of the invigorating air and relaxation outside the city. The trip from New York took just over an hour; a trolley would meet the visitors and transport them to the Great South Bay. For many years, the South Shore Railroad was the only electrified train, and Babylon became the point of convergence for travelers bent on speed. The village also witnessed the birth of radio and wireless communication when Marconi contacted ships at sea from Babylon. |

Bay Village $19.99 Tucked away in the northeast corner of Cuyahoga County, Bay Village lies just outside Cleveland. The first settlers arrived around 1810 during the nation”s westward expansion. The village was primarily agrarian in the beginning, home to many vineyards. By the end of the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution had gained momentum, and in 1896, an electric railway was built through the city, running from Cleveland to Toledo. Bay Village evolved from a fishing and farming hamlet into a retreat and resort area for some of Cleveland”s wealthiest families. Many of their summer cottages still stand today as refurbished family homes. Bay Village explores this community”s rich history through vintage images from the Bay Village Historical Society and the Bay Village Library. |

First People of Back Bay: Bootleggers, Rum Runners, Shrimp Pirates, and Oyster Thieves $18.79 First People of Back Bay is told by a young boy growing up in the commercial seafood industry on the Gulf of Mexico. If there ever was a smorgasbord of people assimilated in an industry, the Gulf Coast seafood industry was it. The boyas journey in commercial fishing began when he was about five years old and continued until he finished college. It involved a range of relationships and characters that are described in the chapters of this book. Each character as well as the Gulf Coast area had a profound influence on the storytelleras life. Probably at least ninety percent of the fishermen in those days would have been classified as living in a state of poverty under todayas standards. Whatever they got or achieved, they did on their own. The book is based on real-life people and situations; however, it is fiction because the names and some of the situations have been modified for publication. |

Fly-Fishing Secrets of Alaska’s Best Guides $19.95 Alaska is a large and complicated place, filled with incredible natural resources and some of the richest fisheries in the world. Though it is potentially a fly fisher’s paradise, the diversity of its waters makes it difficult to know how to best fish each area. Methods that are effective on one stream don’t necessarily work in another part of the state where conditions are vastly different. Tapping into local knowledge is the key to ensuring the exceptional quality of fishing that Alaska has to offer. In Fly Fishing with Alaska’s Greatest Guides, Will Rice interviews eleven of the most skilled, experienced, and well-respected guides who have been fishing the greatest waters in Alaska for many years. The book covers the most popular fishing areas of the state: Bristol Bay and Southwest Alaska; South-central Alaska; Kodiak Island and Resurrection Bay; Southeastern Alaska and the Lost Coast. Guides generously share their expertise and the methods they’ve spent years developing for every variety of fly fishing. As you gain insights into their various approaches, you will learn how to choose the type of fishing that most appeals to you and the kind of trip you wish to take. You’ll also be able to make an informed decision about where and when to go, the proper gear and flies for your trip, and the basic techniques that are effective on your chosen water. Whether you’re casting dry flies to grayling, swinging big leeches for steelhead, or stripping heavy baitfish patterns in the open ocean for salmon, you are guaranteed to enjoy the fly-fishing trip of a lifetime. |

Galveston Bay $47.89 Galveston Bay is the recreational center of the Texas coast–a fishing, boating, and birdwatching playground for the almost four million people who live on or near it. |

Pittsburg $21.99 Situated at the far reaches of the Bay Area, Pittsburg has long been perceived as a commuter town, an out-of-the-way bedroom community. Yet this city has a rich and varied history stretching back to the early days of statehood and has played an important role in commerce, both to the state and to the Bay Area. Before long the burgeoning city had a fishing industry rivaling that of San Francisco”s famed Fisherman”s Wharf and a largely Italian fishing community. By the 1900s, a surprising number of industries set up factories along the waterfront property of Pittsburg. In 1942, the beginning of World War II brought the building of Camp Stoneman, an important departure point for many servicemen. Later, the city became known as a residential destination. Readers of this book will surely see Pittsburg in a new light as they enjoy the surprising and varied tales of the city”s previous generations. |
