Montana Misadventures

Montana Misadventures

$29.95

Enjoy the amusing adventures, and sometimes misadventures, of young boys growing up along the shores of the mighty Missouri River. This book provides a nostalgic slice of history seen through the eyes of adventurous youths in mid-twentieth-century Montana. Growing up in Great Falls, Montana, in the mid-twentieth century was a unique and challenging experience. My brother and I, along with our companions, took full advantage of the hunting and fishing venues near Great Falls in our quest for adventure. When we werenat hunting and fishing, we played baseball on scrubby grass fields in Gibson Park and hockey on the parkas frozen pond, and in barn-like arenas in the prairie towns of southern Alberta. Our family endured the Depression and dealt with the struggles imposed by World War II, so we had an enduring need for earning our own spending money by working on a variety of jobs.

Fly-Fishing For Sharks: An American Journey

Fly-Fishing For Sharks: An American Journey

$11.49

For three years, journalist Richard Louv listened to America by going fishing with Americans. Doing what many of us dream of, he traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from trout waters east and west to bass waters north and south. Fly-Fishing for Sharks is the result of his journey, a portrait of America on the water, fishing rod in hand. To explore the cultures of fishing, Louv joined a bass tournament on Lake Erie and got a casting lesson from fly-fishing legend Joan Wulff He angled with corporate executives in Montana and fly-fished for sharks in California. He spent time with fishing-boat captains in Florida, the regulars who fish New York City’s Hudson River, and a river witch in Colorado. He teamed secrets of fishing and living from steelheaders in the Northwest, Bass’n Gals in Texas, and an ice-fisher in the North Woods. Along the way, he heard from one of Hemingway’s sons what it was like to fish with Papa and from Robert Kennedy, Jr., how fishing changed his fife. As he describes the eccentricities, obsessions, and tribulations of dedicated anglers, he also uncovers the values that unite them. He reveals the healing qualities of fishing, how it binds the generations, how the angling business has grown, and how the future of fishing is threatened. But most of all, Fly-Fishing for Sharks is about the unforgettable characters Louv meets on the water and the stories they tell. From them, Louv learns about our changing relationship with nature, about a hidden America — and about himself.

In "Around the Next Bend" Bob Shanks leads us, with many touches of wry dry Tennessee humor, through his half-century of trout fishing, from the cool rush and roar of the Great Smokies’ streams to Montana’s big-skied trout waters. The engaging book will appeal not only to dedicated anglers, but also to non-fishing lovers of the outdoors for whom a fly rod is just a skinny hiking stick.-Mart Baldwin, PhD, author of "Drifting the River: Growing Up Wild in the South," numerous travel essays, and a guide to off-the-path places in the CarolinasBob Shanks is a soft-spoken Southern gentleman. His decades-long love of both fishing and his fishing friends illuminates the pages of his book. These are the kinds of memories good friends swap over a fine Tennessee sipping whiskey at the end of a long day of fishing. Bob’s stories are humorous, heartwarming, and sometimes heart-breaking as with losing the battle to save the Little Tennessee River from destruction at the hands of the TVA vandals. Anyone who loves fishing and fishing stories told with warmth and charm will enjoy this book. -Richard Lessner, PhD, Executive Director Madison River Foundation, Ennis, MontanaI’ve enjoyed fly fishing with Bob Shanks and cherished every encounter. I shared some of his favorite runs on Montana’s Ruby River where he insisted that I take the first cast with a big hopper under a grassy overhang. He would suggest a spot to cast, and the spot would produce. I know you will treasure Bob’s stories, and you’ll get to know him as I do: as a true sportsman, a fly angler of grace, knowledge and merit, and a genuine, gracious southern gentleman. The words, the language, the generosity of spirit in these pages: pure Robert Shanks. -Juni Fisher, Songwriter Red Geetar Records recording artist

Told through the eyes of a longtime Montana fishing guide and itinerant fishing bum, A Good Life Wasted offers a unique perspective on an implausible period in the recent history of human civilization. When Dave Ames started guiding, Rocky Mountain locals rode horses and dug camas roots; now they’re trading stock options on cell phones. The collision of stone and computer ages was short-lived, but the deep-rooted themes of this book remain.A Good Life Wasted–a chronicle and celebration of the fishing-guide life–is poignant and spiritual; it’s Blackfoot Indians and copper miners’ daughters; it’s fiddles and guitars and the fabric of space; it’s about what happens to wild people when the wilderness is gone. From the first chapter–in which Dave Ames recalls bluffing his way into a job as a fishing guide to the rich and famous (after barely managing to suppress the overwhelming urge to go postal at the federal agency where he suffered his first, and only, “real” job in a cubicle farm)–we’re hooked. We gladly follow Ames as he describes the rite of tasting clouds of mating midges to better match the hatch, tells the story of a fabled Blackfoot fishing guide, and shares his further adventures as a guy with no job, no office, and no stress. A Good Life Wasted spins a fascinating, compelling web–a web that entices the deskbound salary slave to make a break for it, and head west to big sky and fast, cold water, ASAP.

American Waters: Fly-Fishing Journeys of a Native Son

$1.99

Peter Kaminsky didn’t know a fly rod from a hot rod back in 1974 when, while vacationing in the Florida Keys, he landed his bait right under the nose of a 35-pound grouper. At that life-changing moment, he was hooked on fishing. In the three decades since, the New York Times outdoors columnist has fished his way across his native land, discovering America-and himself-through his passion for angling. In American Waters, Kaminsky shares in lyrical prose his fly-fishing journeys around what he calls “the fishingest country on earth.” From the Ozarks to the Everglades, from the Brooklyn waterfront to Yellowstone, from the bountiful riptides of Montauk Point to the spring creeks of Montana, Kaminsky has fished the best. Whether he is pursuing tarpon in the Marquesas, smallmouth in the Ozarks, or the albacore of Cape Fear, the fishing tales recounted here convey the simple joy, timelessness, grace, and beauty that are to be found casting a fly rod.

 Big Hole River

Big Hole River

$62.88

The Big Hole River is a tributary of the Jefferson River, approximately 153 miles (246 km) long, in southwestern Montana in the United States. It rises in Skinner lake in the Beaverhead National Forest in the Beaverhead Mountains of the Bitterroot Range at the continental divide along the Montana-Idaho border in western Beaverhead County. It flows northwest and north, past Wisdom and between the Anaconda Range to the northwest and the Pioneer Mountains to the east. It flows around the north end of the Pioneer Mountains, then southeast, past the town of Wise River, Montana, where it is joined by the Wise River. Near Glen, Montana it turns northeast and joins the Beaverhead River near Twin Bridges to form the Jefferson. The river is an historically popular destination for fly fishing, especially for trout. It is the last habitat in the contiguous United States for native Fluvial Arctic Grayling. Historic conflicts between ranchers in the valley who depend on the river for irrigation and recreationalists have been mitigated through the creation of the Big Hole River Watershed Committee (1995).

Funny, sharp, gritty Dahlgren Wallace is a Montana fly-fishing guide caught in the middle of a nasty war over land and history.Dahlgren is a former college football star, a veteran of the first Gulf War and a former member of the Marine Corps elite Force Recon. He thought he had put the world of intrigue and special forces behind him by becoming a fly-fishing guide. He’s the river keeper and guide on an expansive, private Montana river owned by a media mogul. When the novel opens, Dahlgren is guiding when his boss’s latest guest is bludgeoned to death, practically under Dahlgren’s nose. Dahlgren is immediately suspected of the crime. In an effort to defend himself, Dahlgren must resort to the skills he learned in Special Ops-skills he had hoped he’d never need again. As he delves further into the case, he finds himself embroiled with a band of Neo-Nazi-type militia; a radical environmental movement; a colony of peaceful Hutterites; a kilt-wearing clandestine cattleman’s organization; and the FBI. All the while, he is led down a twisted path of discovery and into the deepest recesses of Mormon history. Full of action, laugh-out-loud humor, and tremendous suspense and peopled with wonderfully surprising characters-from a Jewish deli-owner/scholar to a former Miss Utah – Blood Atonement is a winner. Tenuto’s agile style and lightning-fast pace will make the world impatient for the next Dahlgren Wallace mystery.

 Blood Knot

Blood Knot

$18.24

With Blood Knot, award-winning author Pete Fromm confirms his place as one of the outstanding literary talents mining the natural world. In this powerful collection, he lures startling drama from seemingly still surfaces with ten of his finest fishing stories: a wedding in the ice-cold rush of a Montana river symbolizes the promise and fear of marriage, a young ‘hood’ shows his true colors when he takes his girlfriend’s little brother out fishing for muskie, and an eight-year-old boy is moved cross-country, away from his father, only to practice knots on the bedpost in anticipation of their reunion and return to the river. Peter Fromm’s tales bond his characters not only to each other but also to nature and the bittersweet truth of their very existence. Although the fish range from the smallest beaver-pond brook trout to the hulking, invisible paddlefish, in the end it’s the people – as varied and vulnerable as the fish they pursue – who will draw you into their lives and hold on to a piece of you long after the stories end. Whether at camp, at the lake, in the mountains or high off in the backwoods, we all cherish our memories of summer vacations at the cabin. Maybe it was enjoying the coziness of log bunk beds, playing games with cousins and friends, diving off wooden-plank docks, fishing from the riverbank, being lulled by the rustling breeze or mesmerized by the riffling stream or slapping waves-whatever, these experiences linger in our memories. The homes and camps presented in Cabins are making new memories for today’s families. Some are contemporary homes that incorporate rustic furniture; some are traditional cabins with great rooms and high ceilings. All exude the warmth of wood railings and stone. Engaging, impassioned, and always entertaining, Kylloe has an eye for rustic detail and signature style of photography that makes this, his thirteenth design book, exquisite in every regard. These homes feature idyllic settings for family fun and entertaining, masterfully crafted rock fireplaces and sensual rustic furnishings to covet. Featuring homes across the upper United States, from New England and New York to Montana and Washington. Ralph Kylloe is a leading authority on rustic furniture and architecture and is the owner of the Ralph Kylloe Gallery at Lake George in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. He is the author of thirteen previous rustic design books, including Cabin in the Woods, Cabins and Camps, Rustic Artistry for the Home, Rustic Traditions, The Rustic Cabin, and Adirondack Home.

Eighteen-year-old Polly, the narrator, and Odd, who is a year younger and several degrees more impulsive, are the only survivors of a MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, also known as flesh-eating bacteria) outbreak in their town that killed its five other victims. They did not survive unscathed. Polly lost an eye, and her face is scarred. Odd lost his foot and is tortured by phantom pain. Polly and Odd had no connection before MRSA, but now that their former plans are obsolete, they have nothing but each other and a shared affection for trout fishing. The rest of their small Montana hometown is decidedly uncomfortable for the two who lived. So when Odd shows up in his grandmother”s 1979 Cadillac D”Elegance, promising a day on the river, it”s pretty clear that a remarkable journey is in store for the two of them.

Catching Big Fish on Light Fly Tackle

$12.5

“When it comes to short rods and light tackle, Wendelburg’s the best I’ve ever seen.”-Doug Swisher, coauthor of Fly Fishing Strategy and Selective Trout Tom Wendelburg lives to fish. A prolific outdoor writer and photographer, a respected and innovative fly-tyer, a keen observer of fish habitat and behavior, a versatile and passionate fisherman-Wendelburg is all of these. He is one of the most-published writers on fishing, with bylines in such magazines as Fly Fisherman, but this is his first book. Catching Big Fish on Light Fly Tackle is a book to be savored and re-read, for it distills decades of fly-fishing knowledge. It includes Wendelburg’s philosophy of using light tackle, his insights on surface and underwater tactics, discussions of his favorite fish (trout, bass, bluegills, salmon, and steelhead) and of his favorite flies, including much-admired fly patterns that he developed (Wendelburg’s hare’s ear scud and his no-hackle hairwing dry fly). Wendelburg is a consummate fisherman and a first-rate teacher, and his enthusiasm is infectious. Author Biography: Tom Wendelburg is an outdoor writer and photographer who lived, worked, and fished in Idaho and Montana before returning to the streams and lakes of his native Wisconsin. Jeff Mayers is a journalist and coauthor of Exploring Wisconsin Trout Streams, also published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Both live in the Madison, Wisconsin, area.
