Layered Clothing is Key
When you dress in layers, it’s easy to add or remove clothing in response to changes in conditions and temperature. When dressing in layers, be sure to include a base layer, a mid layer and an outer layer. The base layer needs to be comfortable against your skin and be able to wick away perspiration to the outer layers for quick drying. Silk is an excellent choice for the base layer. Other good fibres are wool, polyester and polypropylene. The mid layer becomes the base layer in mild or warm conditions. A wind proof jacket is generally required for the mid layer, preferably one with a fleece lining. Another option is separate wind proof and fleece jackets. If your wind proof jacket is also waterproof, you can dispense with the waterproof jacket in the outer layer. The outer layer should be both waterproof and breathable. Technical fabrics like Gore-Tex® are the optimal choice. Finally, in cold conditions, be sure to wear a warm hat and use a layered glove system with a waterproof exterior. Because your clothing is an integral part of deer hunting equipment or bow hunting equipment, it’s important to buy the best quality you can afford.
Socks and Shoes
Socks are critically important items that should be purchased in hunting equipment shops. Wool is the best choice because it retains insulating properties when wet. If you can find socks made from Merino wool, you’ll find them to be exceptionally soft and comfortable. Some hunters find that applying the layered idea to socks works well if they wear a thick wool outer sock over a thin silk inner sock. The type of shoes or boots depends on the conditions, with boots being more appropriate for cold conditions. Fit is the most important consideration, so choose shoes or boots with plenty of inner padding and cushioning, especially in the insoles. Avoid removable insoles because their movability can cause blisters.
Clothing is essential hunting equipment in the UK. When stocking up on hunting supplies, be sure to include functional, comfortable clothing.
